Check out this history lesson on Vicente Guerrero, Mexico’s first black President. He was a war hero who helped expel Spanish rule and abolished slavery. Elected in 1829, he puts US racial history to shame because not just was he historically significant, as the first black President, but he also made landmark legislation and fought vigorously for the rights of black and indigenous people. Guerrero’s presidency would be the equivalent of Barack Obama leading a revolt against the Fed and starting massive jobs programs in low-income black and brown communities (not a particularly bad idea but we all know that won’t happen anytime soon).
